PSA #3

Critical Items that every van should carry

There are hundreds of lists like this all over the interwebs. These are the critical items that everyone should have in their vans. Even if you do not know how to use all these items, if you have the tools handy it may be easier to find help when needed.

That being said, here is my particular list.

CO Monitor

If you read PSA #1 you will understand the need for this. No further explanation needed.

Tire Repair Kit

Even if you never had to repair a tire, it’s good to have this if you need it. Get to a gas station or truck stop – someone there will be able to help!

Battery Jump Kit

I’ve found that the NOCO GB40 Jump starter is the best value for the money. It’s the right power for Shabazan, but your rig may need something stronger. It is compact and powerful. Saved me a few times.

Tool Kit

Your basic tool kit should contain:

  • Screwdrivers
  • Wrenches. at least 2
  • A hammer
  • Hex key kit (imperial and metric)
  • Utility knife /w blades
  • Plyers
  • Electric tape
  • Duct tape
  • Extra batteries of the types you use.
  • Zip ties

Fire Extinguisher

At least one near the driver. Perhaps also one in the back section. Remember to check them on a regular basis. This one is rated for Li-Ion batteries, if that’s your requirement. Less expensive one are also available, if you do not need the extra capabilities.

Tire inflator

The Fanntik tire inflator is not particularly inexpensive, but it is fast and can fill to over 100 PSI! More than enough for most van tires. It recharges via USB. Remember to check it often.

Basic First Aid Kit

I suppose that this should go without saying, but I’m saying it anyway. Get a good all purpose first aid kit. And know what’s in it. Remember to replace expired items as required!

Tire Jack / Lug wrench

Most van have this, but it’s good to make sure you have all the necessary parts. If you’ve done a bit of work to your van, and added weight it may be that the supplied scissor jack is not sufficient to lift your vehicle. In that case, you should really get a strong bottle jack. I like this one with a case to keep it clean. The base is a bit small, so I keep a 2’x2′ 3/4′ board under the mattress – also good if the ground is uneven or soft.

For a Lug Wrench I carry a 1/2″ drive 25″ breaker bar, coupled with a 21mm deep impact socket.
